Creating an Application - Procedure

1. Select Settings from the Application menu bar. The Application Settings dialog is displayed. If your application is for an image scanner, you must select the Image Settings appropriately, including Read Cell Spacing and Light Source. Most settings are for image scanners. The values defined in this dialog are used by all documents in the application. If you are using the ScanFlex option with your application, be sure to enable ScanFlex before scanning to define timing marks, form ID marks, or OMR grids.

1. Select Document from the menu bar and then select New. The New Document dialog box is displayed. Complete the appropriate options, add background form images, and scan sheets as necessary. (For details on how to do this see the New Document dialog help topic.)
2. When complete, click OK.

1. Select New from the Output menu bar item.
2. In the New Output Format dialog box, type the name of your new format in the Name field.
3. Select the check box next to Apply Output Format to current document.

CAUTION: If you are creating an application that contains multiple documents, you MUST define an output format for each document. If you do not, the application will NOT be released for scanning.

4. Click OK.

1. If you are working with a multi-sheet document, select the sheet you are working on by typing the number of the sheet in the Sheet field. (This field is in the lower left corner of the ScanTools Application module window.)
2. Place the sheet in the scanning bed and click the Scan Sheet button on the Application module window.
3. If the grid requires a translate table, use the Translate Table Tool to define it. You can also import translate tables from a different application into the currently open application, see Importing Translate Tables.
4. In the lower left corner of the ScanTools Application module window, click the New button. The Output Field Entry dialog box appears.
5. Define the name and characteristics of the output field that data from the grid is transferred to.
6. Click OK.
7. Save the application. Select Save or Save As from the Application menu. The Save As dialog appears. Enter a name in the Title field and a number in the Number field.
8. Select the boundaries of the grid using the OMR Tool. If the OMR Tool dialog box is not displayed, click the OMR Tool button in the upper left corner of the Application Module window. There are two methods of defining grids: the Click+Drag method and the 5-Click method. More info on defining grids...

9. For Image Scanner Implementation Only: Enlarge the grid clip to include the handprint boxes above the bubbles. Place the cursor at the top left corner of the handprint boxes. Then, while pressing the CTRL key, click the left mouse button and drag the pointer to the bottom right corner of the handprint boxes. Then release the mouse button and control key.
10. For Image Scanner Implementation Only: Select the Clip Attributes button from the OMR Tool and define the clip parameters. See Image Clips and Archive this Clip for more information.
11. In the lower left corner of the ScanTools Application module window, click the Append button. This associates the grid with the output field. If you do not associate a grid with the output field, the field name appears in the Fields list with an asterisk ( * ) following it.
12. Periodically save the application by selecting Save from the Application menu bar item. This will ensure that the application is backed up. The application requires a name and a unique three-digit identification number.
13. Repeat steps 12 through 20 for every grid to be defined.
14. From the Options selection on the ScanTools Application module menu bar, you can define other parameters associated with the application module. More info: Options - Application module.
15. From the Application menu select Settings. In the Application Settings dialog, look at the item, Release for Scanning in the top left corner. There should be a check mark next to it. If there is no check mark, move the mouse pointer to the Release for Scanning item, and click the left mouse button. This must be checked before the application can actually be used for scanning.
16. Select Application from the menu bar, then select Save.
17. Select Application from the menu bar, then select Exit. You must exit the ScanTools Application module and return to the Main Window before you can perform scanning, editing, or converting actions.
