Creating "Mark All That Apply" Grids

NOTE: If your application requires "Mark All That Apply" data collection, consider using Mark All That Apply field attribute types. Mark All That Apply and Mark All That Apply (Left Justify) provide more functionality and are easier to implement than the Mark All That Apply grid method described below. See Creating a Mark All That Apply Field and the Mark All That Apply section of Output Field Entry for additional information.

The ScanTools application module supports the type of grid that is mark all that apply. It is not a standard system translate table. If you have imported a document that had a grid defined as "mark all that apply" you will see a translate table and OMR Tool type "Mark all that apply" because it is a type of grid you can define in Scantron DesignExpert software. If you use that definition in Scantron DesignExpert, information is transferred into the ScanTools application module creating the translate table and grid type.

You need to consider the following items in creating a mark all that apply grid.

To create a mark all that apply grid and corresponding output field:

  1. Select the New button in the lower left corner of the application module window to create an output field entry. On the Output Field Entry dialog box, enter the name. Then select type Numeric if you want the data to be available later (for editing or converting) as one block of numbers; use 1-Digit if you want the data to be available as separate items.
  2. On the OMR Tool dialog box, select One digit response as the Type (or mark all that apply if it appears) and select Orientation 90 degrees different than the way the grid will run.
  3. Define the grid location by either the click+drag method or the 5-click method, keeping only one line of bubbles selected. Your result should be a row or column of "1"s. For details on this, see Defining Grids.

NOTE: If you use 5-click, you must click in the exact order of the positions on the grid. The first three clicks will be in the first response position, the fourth click will be in the second response position, and the fifth (last) click will be in the last character position.

  1. Click the Append button. In the Fields window, the field name appears. In the Grids window, the output field length will automatically display the number of positions in the response grid followed by a 1.
