Download Introduction

The Download Plus Utility (Download) allows you to program OpScan and iNSIGHT 2/4 (OMR Only) scanners using a download command file that is sent from a host computer. The commands in this file control how the scanner collects data from forms during scanning. Download uses the information in a ScanTools Application file to create the command file. Using Download, the scanner returns data to the host in the form of ASCII coded records rather than the image of the form.

Scanner and PC Hardware Requirements

The OpScan and iNSIGHT 2/4 (OMR Only) scanners that support Download have the download hardware option installed. This larger chip permanently stores standard information needed by the scanner and the application information sent in the download command files.

Scanner and PC must communicate via an RS232 communications port. Download does not support USB communications between the scanner and the PC.

Download provides, in general, the functions of the DOS download file generation and downloading utilities DLGEN and DLDEF. It does not include DLPACK’s ability to pack an unpacked command file. Instead, an unpacked command file is packed automatically as it is downloaded.

Some ScanTools forms application functions cannot be represented in a .DLF file. You can simulate these functions by adding routines to your host application program to modify data records after scanning. A separate host application is required for processing the output records sent to the host by the scanner.

For information on creating host applications, refer to the Host Programmer's Guide for your scanner.

Download is a separate executable program, not a part of ScanTools software. Download software uses components of ScanTools software to access existing applications and edit profiles, and to communicate with the scanner. ScanTools software does not need to be running for Download software to use these components.

The Download Plus Utility’s major actions are:

You access these functions from the Download main window.
