Editing

Data editing corrects field data scanned into the ScanTools system. Several editing methods are available to you, including Online Editing, Online Edit Correction, Post-Scan Editing, and Manual Editing. These options enable you to select an editing method that best meets the needs of each of your scanning applications.

Online Editing

Online Editing is the process by which scanned data is checked by an edit profile and actions are performed, as sheets are scanned, based on whether or not the edit passes or fails. The actions you can specify include Flag Failed Records, Reject Failed Records, Stop Scanner on Failure, and Select Sheets on Failure. These are all specified in the On Failure dialog when you are setting up the edit profile for your application. See On Failure dialog and Edit Failure dialog for more information about online editing.

Online Edit Correction

Online Edit Correction also checks scanned data by an edit profile and then gives you the ability to review and correct any edit failures during scanning, before the document record is saved to the data file. The Edit Correction dialog shows a list of document fields that have failed edit verification based on the current edit profile. See Edit Correction dialog, Scanner Error dialog, Edit Queue Not Empty dialog, and On Failure dialog for more information about online edit correction.

Post-Scan Editing

Post-Scan Editing lets you edit a data file from a previous scanning session. You can either review and correct records that have been flagged during the scanning session or you can perform the entire editing process post-scanning. The Post-Scan Edit dialog lets you move from record to record, fixing the field contents. For Image Scanner Implementation Only: If you want to capture clips of edit failures, you must have an edit profile selected at scan-time. See Post-scan Edit dialog for more information about post-scan editing.

Manual Editing

You can edit data files manually if desired. In this operation, you open the data file, view the field data, and change the data in the view window. There is no edit profile associated with this method of editing. Because making changes this way can be tedious, we recommend that you use this method sparingly only for data that has been erroneously sent to the data file. See Editing Data Files Manually for more information about the manual editing process.
