Working with Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) and Image Scanners

ScanTools software supports both OMR and Image technology scanners. While most software functions apply to both scanner types, some apply to image scanners only.

Scantron assumes that your application development will fall into one of three categories: For OMR Scanners Only, For OMR and Image Scanners, or For Image Scanners Only.

For OMR Scanners Only

If you are developing applications for OMR scanners only, we suggest that you not include Image settings in your application definition.

For OMR and Image Scanners

If you are developing applications for both OMR and Image scanners, use whatever image settings are appropriate to your application. Most Image settings will not be applied when you are using an OMR scanner. They will be applied when you are using an Image scanner. This also enables you to plan ahead for applications that will be implemented on an OMR scanner today and migrated to an Image scanner in the future. See Graybox Tool dialog and On Failure dialog for information about Image settings that may apply to OMR scanners.

For Image Scanners Only

If you are developing applications for Image scanners only, use whatever image settings are appropriate to your application.

Image Function Identification

Online Help - Online help identifies Image functions as follows:

Software Dialog Boxes and Controls - Software dialog boxes and controls for "image", "clips", "archiving", "bitone", "graybox", and "iNAME" functions generally apply to Image scanners only. Press F1 to view online help and determine exactly how these functions are used with image scanners.
