Translate Tool dialog

Using the translation tables created with the translate tool, each position in a response grid is translated to one or more characters that will be written into the output field for the grid. The following standard translate tables are provided in every ScanTools application. These system translate tables cannot be edited or deleted.

By design, every translate table name appears as a Type in the OMR Tool in all documents in the application.

For Scantron DesignExpert forms design software users: custom translate tables are generated for response grids during Export to ScanTools for the following conditions:

For details, see Scantron DesignExpert online help.

Creating a Custom Translate Table

In the upper left corner of the application module, open the Translate Tool to create a new translate table. It is the button that has 1 = A, or Translate on it. When you create a new table, the table name automatically appears as a type on the OMR Tool. This allows you to define a custom grid. Once you have created a new, custom translate table, you can add and delete entries after the Omit and Multiple characters. Once created, custom translate tables are available in the OMR Tool in all documents in the application.

When you select a table, you can see the list of characters for each response position in the Response Translate String list area. Each table begins with an Omit and Multiple character; the remaining entries vary depending on the table type. The system translate tables listed above may NOT be edited or deleted.

For example: Use a translate table to define a two-position grid named "gender" (M for Male, F for Female). This special type is added to the types available in the OMR Tool. Whenever you select "gender" in OMR tool, it will give you the two-position grid made of M and F.

For example: Translate tables are used with Summation fields. Use a translate table to define an eight-response-position grid named "Quantity" (numeric strings 50, 30, 20, 10, 5, 3, 2, and 1) for a Summation field. This special type is added to the types available in the OMR Tool. Whenever you select "Quantity" in OMR tool, it will give you the eight-response-position grid made of 50, 30, 20, 10, 5, 3, 2, and 1. See the Summation Attribute section of Output Field Entry dialog for additional information about creating Summation fields.

For example: Translate tables are used with Mark All That Apply fields. Use a translate table to define a ten-response-position grid named "Activity" (character strings Golf, Tennis, Biking, Walking, Dancing, Skating, Swimming, Softball, Gardening, and Volleyball) for a Mark All That Apply or Mark All That Apply (Left Justify) field. This special type is added to the types available in the OMR Tool. Whenever you select "Activity " in OMR tool, it will give you the ten-response-position grid made of Golf, Tennis, Biking, Walking, Dancing, Skating, Swimming, Softball, Gardening, and Volleyball. See the Mark All That Apply Attribute section of Output Field Entry dialog for additional information about creating Mark All That Apply or Mark All That Apply (Left Justify) fields.

Modifying a Custom Translate Table

The custom translate tables you define are available on an application-wide basis. They can be associated with grids and fields in all documents within your application. This means that any modifications you make to a custom translate table are also applied application-wide and must take into account the grids and fields throughout your application that are associated with it.

Recommended Modification Procedure

If you need to change a custom translate table after fields and grids are associated with it, we recommend that you follow these steps:

  1. For each grid defined by the translate table, select the grid that was defined by the translate table, verify the translate table name that appears in the OMR Tool Type area. This must be done in all documents in the application.
  2. Use the Cut button, which removes the grid.
  3. After all grids using the translate table are Cut, select the Translate Tool.
  4. Select the Translate Table name that you want to modify.
  5. Make changes to the Translate Table.
  6. Redefine the grid using the modified Translate Table.
  7. Append the grid to the field using the Append button.

CAUTION: Do not Cut a grid, modify the Translate Table, and then Paste the grid; this will cause errors in the application.

Modification Rules

Although not recommended, it is possible to make some modifications to a custom translate table that is in use. If you do so, ScanTools software will, in most cases, display an error message if you attempt a modification that will render your application unusable. General rules to follow when attempting modifications include:

In addition, some special rules apply to Mark All That Apply, Mark All That Apply (Left Justify), and Summation fields. See Mark All That Apply and Summation for additional information.

We recommend that you test your application after any translate table modifications to verify that it meets your requirements.

Importing Translate Tables

If you have translate tables in a different ScanTools application, you can import translate tables into the application currently open. See the Import Table button below. See Importing Translate Tables for details on how to import translate tables.

Table

The name of the table containing the custom grid type. When you define grids for this application, the table name appears in the OMR Tool as a type, which you can use to create response grids.

Add Table button shows the Add Translate Table dialog where you can enter a name for your new table. Translate table name considerations:

Delete Table button deletes the table selected. You may not delete the system translate tables that are delivered with ScanTools (see above). You see a message if you select one of them to delete.

Import Table buttonshows a series of dialogs which lets you select a different application, and translate tables within that application, to import into the current application. The dialog immediately displayed is the Select Application File. See Importing Translate Tables for details on how to import translate tables.

Response Translate

For each response position, enter the character or string you want to place in the output field.

Add Entry button shows a dialog box enabling you to add an output string to associate with a response position. ScanTools adds the entry after the character currently selected.

Delete Entry button deletes the selected response position and its character or string. You may not delete Omit and Multiple characters; and you may not delete response positions in the ScanTools system tables (see above).
