Scanner Configuration dialog

Scanner Model - select the scanner you are using. After you select the scanner, the configuration information in this dialog is automatically updated based on what is appropriate for the scanner. For example: the EZData scanner does not have a Transport Printer, hardware Bar Code reader, or Select Stacker, so those items are not listed as options when that scanner is selected. The EZData scanner select stacker function is built into the scanner; it uses the front card feed area to reject a document.

Transport Printer, hardware Bar Code, and Select Stacker (OpScan 3/4/4U, and OpScan iNSIGHT 4) - check these if your scanner is equipped with these options and you want ScanTools software to control and use them. Checking these items enables them for use by ScanTools software so be certain that your scanner is actually equipped with them. Auto Configure does not detect the presence of this optional equipment.

NOTE: For the Select Stacker on OpScan 3/4/4U and OpScan iNSIGHT 4 scanners, determine whether the scanner has a select stacker and configure the software accurately. This is important because during scanning, ScanTools software always stops on an unknown form whenever the scanner does not have a select stacker. If ScanTools' knowledge of your scanner configuration is incorrect and it is told there is a select stacker when there is not one, and the Stop Scanner on System Errors check box in the Scanning Options dialog is unchecked, scanning continues on unknown timing marks and unknown form ID marks, causing unrecognized sheets to be ignored.

Select this check box if you want ScanTools software to record statistics on scanning operations to an operations log file. The file is located the ScanTools Data Files directory, in a file named OPERATE.LOG. For an example of what is in this file, see Operations Log.

The first time this is selected, the file is created after the scanning run. If this option is left on, data is added to the file after each scanning run, and the file continues to grow in size. Once the file is created, ScanTools software does not delete it. If turned off, no entry is added to the file. You can change this setting before you scan, as needed.

CAUTION: Auto Configure does NOT detect the Transport Printer, hardware Bar Code, or Select Stacker options. You must manually select these options in this dialog.

1. Select the Communications Port the scanner is connected to (OpScan iNSIGHT (OMR Only), OpScan, and EZData scanners.)

NOTE: Using Auto Configure on an RS232 communications port sends out characters at various baud rates. This has the potential of causing odd behavior in non-scanner serial devices; this is why it is important to make sure you select the port to which the scanner is attached.

2. Make sure the scanner is turned on.
3. Select the Auto Configure button.

• If a serial port(RS232)is detected (i.e., COM1, COM2, etc.), Auto Configure detects the following information from the scanner and automatically updates these items in this dialog.
• Scanner Model
• Baud Rate
• Data Bits
• Parity
• Stop Bits

In the following cases the stop bits are not correctly detected, but this does NOT interfere with communications with the scanner.

• Any baud rate, 7 data bits, Parity Odd, 1 stop bit (is detected as 2)
• Any baud rate, 7 data bits, Parity Even, 1 stop bit (is detected as 2)
• Any baud rate, 7 data bits, Parity None, 1 stop bit (is detected as 2)
• Any baud rate, 8 data bits, Parity None, 1 stop bit (is detected as 2)
• If a USB port is detected, Auto Configure only determines if a scanner is detected and has imaging functionality. The appropriate Scanner Model appears, and "USB port required" appears instead of communication parameters.

The Communications group box applies only to scanners connected to a PC serial port. This area shows the serial communications settings for the serial port you select.

• Port is the port on which the scanner is connected (COM1, COM2, etc.).
• Baud is the baud rate to be used for communications (1200, 4800, 19200, etc.).
• Timeout specifies the amount of time (in seconds) that elapses before ScanTools software sends notification (usually audio) that no communication has been received from the scanner.
• Data Bits is the number of data bits used to communicate with the scanner (7 or 8).
• Parity sets the parity used to communicate with the scanner (Odd, Even, or None).
• Stop Bits is the number of stop bits used to communicate with the scanner (1 or 2).

NOTE: If your scanner is connected to a special communications card supplied by Scantron, no parameters appear in this area.
