Manage Translate Tables Dialog Box

• Translate tables are used with Summation fields.

  Use a translate table to define an eight-response-position grid named "Quantity" (numeric strings 50, 30, 20, 10, 5, 3, 2, and 1) for a Summation field. This special type is added to the types available in the OMR Tool. Whenever you select "Quantity" in OMR tool, it will give you the eight-response-position grid made of 50, 30, 20, 10, 5, 3, 2, and 1. See Creating a Summation Grid for details.

• Translate tables are used with Mark All That Apply fields.

  Use a translate table to define a ten-response-position grid named "Activity" (character strings Golf, Tennis, Biking, Walking, Dancing, Skating, Swimming, Softball, Gardening, and Volleyball) for a Mark All That Apply or Mark All That Apply (Left Justify) field. This special type is added to the types available in the OMR Tool. Whenever you select "Activity " in OMR tool, it will give you the ten-response-position grid made of Golf, Tennis, Biking, Walking, Dancing, Skating, Swimming, Softball, Gardening, and Volleyball. See Creating a "Mark All That Apply" Grid for details.

Custom translate tables are generated for response grids during Export to ScanTools for the following conditions:

• Custom designators – if a response grid has the data type of Use Custom Designators and has custom designators defined, the custom designator list name and entries are automatically converted to a custom translate table with the same name and entries as the designator list.
• Mark all that apply grid – if a response grid has Mark All That Apply defined as the data type for the Grid Attributes, a custom translate table is automatically created with the name of Mark all that apply. This type of grid must be either a single column or single row.

• Translate table entries can be added anywhere within a table unless the is associated with a Summation field. For translate tables associated with Summation fields, table entries can be added after the last entry used by any grid within the application.
• The length of an added translate table entry cannot be greater than the length of the longest entry already in the table.
• Translate table entries cannot be deleted if they are in use.
• While a translate table is in use, reducing the length of the longest entry will not change the size of the output produced by the table.

Table Contents	View and work with the contents of the translate table. Use this element… …to… Response column View the list of possible responses for the field. Omit and Multiple characters are always listed first, followed by a numbered list of each grid response position that will be generated using this translate table. There are two default entries for every table: Omit is the response position used if a respondent does not make a selection in that grid row. Multiple is the response position used if the respondent makes multiple marks in the same grid row. NOTE: You cannot edit this column; the response is always generated for you to match the grid cell. Translate column View the character or string that will appear in the output field for each response position. If you are creating a new entry, type the text you want to replace this response in your output file. NOTES:  You cannot add entries to the standard translate tables provided with ScanTools. Of the standard translate tables provided with ScanTools, you can only edit the entries for Gender. You cannot delete entries from the standard translate tables provided with ScanTools
Delete Entry	Remove the highlighted entry from the translate table. NOTE: You cannot delete either Omit or Multiple, the two default entries.

1. Select or create an OMR grid.
2. In the OMR Tool palette, select a translate table from the Type list.
3. Place the grid on the sheet as you would normally.

1. Select Document > Manage Translate Tables.
2. Click on the right-hand side of the Translate Table list.
3. Select AddTable.
4. Enter a name.
5. Edit the table as needed:
   • To add an entry, scroll to the end of the list, click <New Entry>, enter the value, and press Enter.
   • To edit an entry, scroll to the entry, double-click the translate entry, make any changes, and press Enter.
   • To delete an entry, highlight the entry and click Delete Entry.
6. Click OK.

1. Select Document > Manage Translate Tables.
2. Select a translate table from the Table Name list.

NOTE: Some types (e.g. BCD, litho-code, etc.) are computed and cannot be shown or manipulated in the Manage Translate Tables dialog box.

• Make any necessary changes:
  • To add an entry, scroll to the end of the list, click <New Entry>, enter the value, and hit Enter.

  NOTE: You cannot add entries to the standard translate tables provided with ScanTools.

  • To edit an entry, scroll to the entry, double-click the translate entry, make any changes, and press Enter.

  NOTE: Of the standard translate tables provided with ScanTools, you can only edit the entries for Gender.

  • To delete an entry, scroll to the desired response and click Delete Entry.

  NOTES:

  • You cannot delete entries from the standard translate tables provided with ScanTools.
  • You cannot delete either Omit or Multiple, the two default entries.

2. Click OK.

1. Select Document > Manage Translate Tables.
2. Click on the right-hand side of the Translate Table list.
3. Select RenameTable.
4. Change the table name.

NOTE: You cannot rename the standard translate tables provided with ScanTools.

5. Click OK.

1. Select Document > Manage Translate Tables.
2. Click on the right-hand side of the Translate Table list.
3. Select DeleteTable.

NOTE: You cannot delete the standard translate tables provided with ScanTools.

4. Click OK.

1. Select Document > Manage Translate Tables.
2. Click on the right-hand side of the Translate Table list.
3. Select Import Table.
4. Locate the ScanTools application containing the translate table to be imported and click Open.
5. Select a translate table from the list of tables available in the application you selected in the previous step.

TIP: If you're not sure which table to select, click Display Table Entries to view the table contents. See Display Table Entries Dialog for details.

6. Click OK. The import process begins, with one of the following results:
   • If a table with the same name as the table you are importing is already in the application, ScanTools presents the Duplicate Translate Table Name - Import Dialog. From there you can import anyway (replace the existing table with the incoming table), skip the table, or cancel the import.
   • If the table is unique, ScanTools presents the Import Translate Table(s) Complete Dialog.

   Click OK.

7. Click OK again to exit the Manage Translate Tables dialog box.

NOTE: Do this for all documents in the application that use the custom translate table.

1. Remove all grids that includes the translate table.
2. Edit the translate table, as described under …edit an existing translate table?, above.
3. Redefine the grid(s) using the modified translate table.
4. Append the grid to the field.
