Creating a Summation Grid

In this topic

Concept

A summation grid is typically used to allow the respondent to enter a number. The grid contains numbers that can be marked in combination to create any number up to a maximum. The maximum will vary with the grid that has been defined. The field length must be long enough to hold all possible responses. The respondent marks any combination of numbers to create the needed number. ScanTools software adds all marked numbers and resolves the grid to a single sum. That sum is written to the associated field in the data record at scan time.

For this topic, we'll be defining a translate table, field, and summation grid for the following:

NOTE: We won't be doing anything with the I and U3 responses here. Summation is only available when the Type is numeric.

Procedure

In this topic, we use a grid that includes the numbers 10-100 by tens in the top row and 1-9 by ones in the bottom row. We first create the translate table, then we place the grid.

Step 1: Create a New Application and Document (to use for practice)

  1. Create a new application by selecting File > New from the Application Designer main window. The Application Setting dialog box appears.
  2. Name the application Summation. Accept all default settings and click OK.
  3. Create a new document by selecting Document > New. The Application Settings dialog box appears.
  4. Name the document Summation. Accept all default settings and click Done. The Document and Sheet Properties dialog box appears.
  5. In the Timing Marks on Front box, enter 63. Click OK.

You have now successfully created a new application and document to use for practice.

Step 2: Create the Summation Translate Table

  1. Create a new translate table by selecting Document > Manage Translate Tables. The Manage Translate Tables dialog box appears.
  2. Select <New Table> from the Table Name list. The Add Translate Table dialog box appears.
  3. Name the translate table Summation. Click OK.
  4. In the Manage Translate Tables dialog box for the Summation table, enter the numbers 10-100 by tens and 0-9 by ones. Be sure to click <New Entry> for each number entered. Click OK when done.

You have now successfully created the translate table.

Step 3: Defining the Test Score Field and a Single Summation Grid

  1. Click New in the Output Palette. The Output Field Entry dialog box appears.
  2. Use the following settings for the Test Score field:
  3. Click OK when done. The Test Score field appears in the Fields list of the Output Palette.
  4. Use the following settings in the OMR Tool Controls for the summation grid that will be placed.
  5. Place the grid by starting at point 3,3 and dragging to point 12,3. Click on Add Link to Grid located in the OMR Tool Controls.
  6. Place the second row of the grid by starting at point 3,4 and dragging to point 12,4. Click Append in the Output Palette to complete the single summation grid placement.

You have now successfully placed a single summation grid.

Step 4: Defining the Total Field and Multiple Summation Grid.

  1. Click New in the Output Palette. The Output Field Entry dialog box appears.
  2. Use the following settings for the Total field:
  3. Click OK when done. The Total field appears in the Fields list of the Output Palette below the Test Score field.
  4. Use the following settings in the OMR Tool Controls for the multiple summation grid that will be placed.
  5. Place the grid by starting at point 3,7 and drag the cursor to the right and down to point 22,12. Click Append in the Output Palette to complete the multiple summation grid placement.

You have now successfully placed a multiple summation grid.
