There are three variables to consider in sheet thickness checking:
- OpScan iNSIGHT 70/150 and 5000i scanners. For details see OpScan iNSIGHT 70/150 or 5000i Scanner Sheet Thickness Checking.
- OpScan scanners. The OpScan scanner can perform sheet thickness checking, either by the scanner or from the values defined in the ScanTools application. For details see OpScan Scanner Sheet Thickness Setting.
- iNSIGHT 20 and iNSIGHT 30 scanners. The iNSIGHT 20 and iNSIGHT 30 scanners do NOT support sheet thickness checking; any values defined in the application are ignored when scanning with an iNSIGHT 20 or iNSIGHT 30 scanner.
- OpScan iNSIGHT 2/4 scanners. For details see OpScan iNSIGHT 2/4 Scanner Sheet Thickness Checking.
- EZData scanner. The EZData scanner does NOT support sheet thickness checking; any values defined in the application are ignored when scanning with an EZData scanner.
The OpScan iNSIGHT 70/150 and 5000i scanners can tolerate some length of foreign material attached to a form, such as a security tab or tape for repair purposes, before it will produce a thickness error. This setting is found in Application Settings dialog, Sheet Length for Thickness Measurement parameter.
The OpScan iNSIGHT 70/150 and 5000i scanners do not reset thickness once the batch has been started.
NOTE: The only time sheets are not stopped on the transport bed is:
The table below describes the resulting actions for the possible combinations of Scanning Options, Scanner Control, Stop Scanner on Thickness Errors and whether or not thickness values are defined in the application.
Scanning Options, Scanner Control, Stop Scanner on Thickness Errors (scanner controls thickness) |
||
---|---|---|
Application Defines |
ON - cannot scan a batch of forms that vary in thickness |
OFF |
All Sheets in the application have a thickness value defined (greater than 0) |
The scanner gate is programmed to accept a range of the value of the first sheet defined in the application. Any sheet whose value is outside the acceptable range causes scanning to stop, and the sheet in error is stopped in the prehead station on the transport bed. |
The scanner gate is set wide open. Each sheet is scanned and the thickness is compared to the value defined in the application for that specific sheet. Any sheet whose value is outside of the acceptable range causes scanning to stop. The sheet in error is sent to the select stacker, along with all following sheets that were already picked and on the transport bed. |
First Sheet = 0 defined in the application (no value). |
The scanner gate is set wide open on the first sheet in the batch. When the first sheet of the batch is scanned, the scanner gate is programmed to accept a range of the value of that first sheet scanned. Any sheet whose value is outside the acceptable range causes scanning to stop, and the sheet in error is stopped in the prehead station on the transport bed. |
Any Sheet except the First Sheet = 0 defined in the application (no value) |
The scanner gate is programmed to accept a range of the value of the first sheet defined in the application. Any sheet whose value is outside the acceptable range causes scanning to stop, and the sheet in error is stopped in the prehead station on the transport bed. |
Same as First Sheet = 0, above. |
For OpScan scanners, a single value calculates an approximate range of acceptable values for passing sheet thickness. The range is approximately 25% less than and 50% greater than the value used for checking. Once a value has been determined, (either by the scanner or the application) acceptable range values are approximately 75 to 150% of that number. Any sheet outside of this general range causes a sheet thickness error. For example: if the value used for thickness checking is 4 mils (1 mil = 1 one-thousandth of an inch), generally, sheets in the range of 3 to 6 will pass thickness checking, sheets that have a value outside of these values will cause a sheet thickness error.
The single value used can be defined in the application, or calculated by the scanner based on the first sheet scanned. See the discussions below.
When this box is checked, the user cannot scan a batch of forms that vary in thickness.
OpScan 2, 3, 4, 4U, 5, 6, 7, 8 |
OpScan 10, 15, 21 |
|
---|---|---|
All Sheets in the application have a thickness value defined (greater than 0 for every sheet in every document) |
Thickness values defined in the application are ignored. The scanner is placed in scanner-controlled thickness mode. The scanner determines a reference thickness value based on the first sheet scanned in the batch. However, within a batch, a scanner-generated hardware error causes the sheet thickness value to be reset using the thickness value of the next sheet picked. A software-generated error does not reset the thickness value currently being used. These errors appear on the scanner display using brackets [ ] around the push-button recovery text. Sheets failing thickness check are stopped on bed. |
Scanner gate is programmed to accept 25% less than and 50% greater than the thickness of the first sheet defined in application. Sheets failing this check are stopped on the bed. Gate is not reprogrammed during the batch. |
Any Sheet = 0 defined in the application (no value) |
Same as All Sheets have thickness value defined, above. Because Stop on Scanner Thickness Errors = On, the scanner operates the same, regardless of whether or not thickness values are defined. |
Scanner gate set wide open on first sheet in batch, then reset to accept 25% less than and 50% greater than the thickness of the first sheet scanned. Sheets failing are stopped on the bed. Gate is not reprogrammed during the batch. |
When this box is not checked, and a thickness value is defined for all sheets, the user can scan a batch of forms that vary in thickness.

All Sheets in the application have a thickness value defined (greater than 0 for every sheet in every document) |
The scanner is placed in host-controlled thickness mode. Each sheet is scanned and the thickness is compared to the value defined in the application for that specific sheet. Sheets failing are sent to the best available stacker. |
Scanner gate is set wide open. Sheets are read and thickness compared to expected value. Sheets failing are selected and scanning stops. Each sheet is compared to known reference value. |
Any Sheet = 0 defined in the application (no value) |
Error condition, error message appears when starting scanning. If any sheet in an application does not have a thickness defined, the Stop on thickness error box must be checked. |
Scanner gate set wide open on first sheet in batch, then reset to accept 25% less than and 50% greater than the thickness of the first sheet scanned. Sheets failing are stopped on the bed. Gate is not reprogrammed during the batch. |
For these scanners, any foreign material attached to a form, such as a security tab or tape for repair purposes, should not be longer than 1 inch in length or it will produce a thickness error.
