Advanced Application Settings dialog

This dialog appears when you click the Advanced button on the Application Settings dialog. Use it to adjust values that are used when scanning on the following image scanners:

Image Quality Sentry Settings

These settings are designed to detect image quality problems that may be caused by dirt, dust, or debris on the scanner read head.

Streak Protection

Use this to define the level of protection against streaks in the image during scanning. A streak is a straight line in the same pixel location, down the length of the image.

The lower the setting, scanning will continue with fairly dark streaks allowed. The higher the setting, fairly light streaks will cause scanning to stop. In other words, the lower the setting, the less sensitive or more tolerant scanning is to streaks in the image. The higher the setting, the more sensitive or less tolerant scanning is to any streaks in the image.

The possible values are: Off, Low, Medium, High, or Maximum. Using the slider control, you can select a position anywhere between these settings. The setting correlates to a percentage value that can be viewed in the View Application dialog.

Off means that no streak detection is being performed, and scanning continues with all streaks (regardless of darkness) being tolerated. Off also turns off OMR Protection, which does not have a separate control. OMR Protection is on when Streak Protection is at a setting higher than Off; when OMR Protection is on, it uses an internally-controlled value that you cannot set.

Maximum provides the highest protection and still allows scanning to occur. Maximum correlates to 90%; streak protection any higher would not allow scanning to occur.

If scanning stops due to streak detection errors, the Scanner Error dialogshows the error: Image quality - top or bottom. You are advised to clean the read head.

Overall Protection

Use this to define the level of protection against changes in white and black read values across the entire sheet image during scanning. Black and white values taken across the sheet during scanning are averaged and compared to values taken during scanner calibration.

The lower the setting, scanning will continue when scanned values differ from calibration values, this may result in darker or lighter images. The higher the setting, the closer the scanned values must be to the calibration values for scanning to continue.

The possible values are: Off, Low, Medium, High, or Maximum. Using the slider control, you can select a position anywhere between these settings. The setting correlates to a percentage value that can be viewed in the View Application dialog.

Off means that no overall detection is being performed, and scanning continues regardless of how different the scanned values are from the calibration values.

If scanning stops due to overall image detection errors, the Scanner Error dialog shows the error: Image quality - top or bottom. You are advised to clean the read head.

Skip Timing Track Area

If this is checked, the timing track area of the image is not analyzed for streak protection and overall protection.

If this is not checked, the timing track area of the image is analyzed for streak protection and overall protection.

Perform OMR Dark Check

If this is checked, each OMR cell column on the scanned sheet is analyzed to locate the edge of the sheet and to ensure that there are appropriate areas of the image where no marks are detected, (that read appropriately as paper). This is designed to detect a read head problem where everything is reading too dark.

If scanning stops due to OMR Dark Check errors, the Scanner Error dialogshows the error: Read check top (Dark) and/or Read Check bottom (Dark). You are advised to clean the read head.

If this is not checked, the OMR Dark Check analysis described above is not performed.
