Migrating Document Types

Sometimes you may need to migrate a Scantron DesignExpert form design from one document type to another. For example, you may need to change an OMR with PrintFlex Document to an OMR Document because you were printing small quantities on your laser printer and you now want to print large quantities on an offset printing press at Scantron Print Services.

When you migrate from one document type to another, you may need to rework your form design and/or your ScanTools application. For example, you may need to update colors and screen percentages for some design elements so they are not scanner readable. And, you may need to raise the read threshold in your ScanTools software application so that too dark laser printing in other areas is ignored. Following is a description of the basic steps required for each document migration type. Your form may require additional steps. Click on the link for the document type you are migrating from.

• Migrating from OMR Document to…

  OMR with PrintFlex Document	Check the OMR Document design with the ScanFlex "Rules for Success." Modify the design of your form, if necessary, to comply with the ScanFlex "Rules for Success." For example, update color and screen percentage. Use a different file name if the OMR and OMR with PrintFlex document versions differ. Check the PrintFlex box in the Print dialog when you laser print your forms. Modify your ScanTools application, if necessary. For example, raise the read threshold. Enable ScanFlex in your ScanTools application.

• Migrating From OMR with PrintFlex Document to…

  OMR Document	Uncheck the PrintFlex box in the Print dialog when you print your forms. Update document colors, if necessary.
  OMR Laser Printer Only Document	This document migration type works best if you migrate to an OMR Laser Printer document with the same response spacing as your OMR document: For 6x5 response spacing, select 6x5 Grid and use stock form 103188; For 6x6 response spacing, select 6x6 Grid and use stock form 265914. Migrating from 6x8 response spacing may require significant rework. Open the OMR Document file. Open a New OMR Laser Printer Only Document file. Select 6x5 Grid or 6x6 Grid to match the spacing of your OMR form. Copy design elements (except graphics) from the OMR Document and paste them to the OMR Laser Printer Only document. Adjust the pasted elements to fit, if necessary. Create new graphics placeholders and links, if necessary. Update document colors, if necessary. Modify your ScanTools application, if necessary.
  OMR Laser Printer Only with PrintFlex Document	This document migration type works best if you migrate to an OMR Laser Printer document with the same response spacing as your OMR document: For 6x5 response spacing, select 6x5 Grid; For 6x6 response spacing, select 6x6 Grid. Graphics Considerations

We do not recommend copying graphics from one document to another. Instead, use the Graphics tool to create new graphics placeholders and then link them to the appropriate graphics files.

Document Color Considerations

When migrating document type, you may need to adjust document colors. For example:

• The colors used in the document you are migrating may have been discontinued.
• When changing from black and white laser printing to color printing, you may need to define document colors.
