A Case Study Comparing Item Writing Training Methodologies:
One Organization’s Journey from In-Person to Remote Subject Matter Expert Training
Monday, March 18 • 11:30 AM • Celebration 7 & 8
Efficiency and cost-effectiveness are crucial elements of any item writing training program. This session explores different subject matter expert item writing training methodologies used in a collaboration between the American Nurses Credentialing Center(ANCC) and Scantron, including in-person meetings, remote full-day webinars, and remote partial-day webinars. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of the value and potential drawbacks associated with each methodology, including:
• Differences in item quality.
• Cost comparisons and budgetary considerations.
• Subject matter expert engagement.
• Strategies to motivate meeting attendees.
This session, which will include presentations followed by an analysis of related key topics and audience discussion, will provide attendees with valuable information to help them achieve the balance between comprehensive, effective subject matter expert item writing training and budgetary responsibility.

The Ins and Outs of Introducing Alternative Item Types
Wednesday, March 20 • 8:30 AM • Bayhill 25 & 26
Alternatives to multiple-choice items are becoming increasingly popular in credentialing assessments. Although there are many potential benefits of using alternative item types (AITs), the process of developing, pilot testing, and implementing AITs requires a great deal of consideration and coordination from all aspects of the testing program. In this interactive presentation, we will share the experiences of one certifying organization that has successfully incorporated several AITs into its assessments alongside multiple-choice items. We will walk attendees through the process of implementing AITs and share key considerations and lessons learned with respect to item design, item development, exam delivery, and stakeholder communication. We will also provide an overview of some psychometric issues that should be considered when introducing AITs (e.g., scoring models, item and exam analysis and factors relating to setting and maintaining the performance standard).

Test Security Breaches: Establishing Policies and Enforcing Decisions
Wednesday, March 20 • 9:45 am • Bayhill 23 & 24
Breaches in test security are common occurrences in the testing industry. With the introduction of new methods of cheating deterrence, increasingly creative means to sidestep security processes and protocols are invented. This presentation will first focus on providing recommendations for establishing policies and procedures related to test security breaches. We will then engage attendees in an exercise to address gray areas in enforcing security breach policies. Finally, we will provide a forum for attendees to present situations encountered in their testing organizations and solicit feedback from the presenters and others. These situations may be real or hypothetical. The purpose is to foster collaboration among testing organization representatives, measurement experts, security professionals, and others, on a difficult issue, recognizing that many in the industry have encountered or will encounter a breach in security that sometimes necessitates a difficult decision.
