Configuring Your Scanner

In this topic

Terms

Transport Printer: An optional Scantron device that is installed on your scanner (during manufacture or as an aftermarket upgrade) that can print on the scanned sheets. It can print static messages or dynamically print scores and other data.

Hardware Bar Code: An optional Scantron device that is installed on your scanner (during manufacture or as an aftermarket upgrade) that reads bar code labels in ladder orientation. NOTE: Image scanners come standard with the ability to read bar code in ladder or fence orientations (called "software bar code").

Select Stacker: An optional Scantron device that attaches to certain model scanners and provides two output trays -- one for properly processed forms, and one for those with errors.

Task

Configuring your scanner for use with ScanTools Plus software takes only a few moments.

NOTE: Auto Configure is not available for the OpScan 10, 15, 16, and 21 scanners.

Procedure

  1. Make sure the scanner is connected to your computer according to the instructions that came with your scanner. Make sure it is turned on.
  2. Select Options > Scanner Configuration. The Scanner Configuration dialog box appears.
  3. Select the scanner model that you have. If you are unsure, select the closest variation. Auto Configure can sometimes automatically adjust if your selection is close.
  4. If Transport Printer, Bar Code, or Select Stacker checkboxes appear after you select the scanner model, select the appropriate boxes to indicate the options that you have.
  5. Leave Write Operations Log cleared. This is for use by Scantron Technical Support in troubleshooting.
  6. Click Auto Configure. ScanTools automatically configures for the scanner and computer hardware that you are using.
  7. NOTE: During configuration, other serial devices connected to your computer may react. This is normal.

  8. If, for some reason, Auto Configure is not successful, contact Scantron Technical Support for assistance.
  9. Click OK to complete scanner configuration.
